MRFC recap from Harrisburg

Monmouth_Harrisburg
Overall, Monmouth had mixed success for the day at the Harrisburg 7s tournament.  The men got off to a slow start but managed to come away with a 17-14 win again Harrisburg II and then rally from a 12-0 half time deficit to win 15-12 against the Hibernians.  In the final pool match, Monmouth lost 21-15 to Lehigh Valley after giving away a try at full time off a steal from the ruck.  The 2-1 record was good enough to earn a spot in the quarterfinals against eventual runner-up Old Gaelic side.  Monmouth held strong through the first half and put in a try  start the second to make it 14-5 to but then let it get away with 3 late Old Gaelic tries for a final score of 31-5.

The Renegades dropped their first match to a tough Keystone side but rallied to with their two next two matches against BiBB and Shippensburg to finish 2-1 in pool play.  With only 4 spots in the bracket, the women finished outside of the final 4 after tiebreakers.

Thanks to eveyone who made the trip and let’s build on this experience and bring home some hardware before the end of the summer.

Practice this week will be held on Tuesday at 7pm at West Front Street Park and remember, this Saturday is KabooomBBQ at the clubhouse.  I’ll forward the info for anyone who isn’t on the yahoo group email

MRFC goes to Churchill Cup

Howdy cowpokes,
Well let’s start off by saying our seats are set up to be in three rows, one behind the other.  This works out better than being in one long line; now we can throw things at each other more easily.  We’ll be sitting in Section 125, Rows 4,5, and 6, Seats 12-21 (13-21 in Row 6).
Kali has asked us to meet at the Rover early to for an opportunity to turn in raffle tickets and money, so even if you’re not coming to the game and want to ditch those tickets, now is an opportunity.  With that in mind, we are proposing to open the club at 8:30 and hit the trains by 10.  Because this is so early, there may be an opportunity to serve breakfast.  Don’t bank on it but know that Kegs and Eggs might be in order.
Even after talking with the rep at the arena (his name is Jason, he was very nice), there is still a major frown on tailgating.  Given the crowd on the day and the perceptions of rugby in general, one would assume there will be a large police presence to curtail any frivolities.  The best bet seems to be to pregame at the Rover and have a roving tailgate on the train.  The start time of the games need to be factored into the train ride, meaning we have to leave at a relatively decent hour to get to the field in time for kickoff.  The train and PATH schedule shows a departure from Red Bank Station at 10:16 puts us to Red Bull Arena by 11:32, enough time to walk to the stadium and perhaps even stop by a bar for one (dozen) last cheap beer(s).  A one way trip is $12.50 for train and PATH unless you’re a senior, child, or disabled, then its $5.75.  Break out those AARP cards!
After the matches, e may either stay up in the area or train it back down to drink the Rover dry or burn Red Bank to the ground.  This area of the day is still up in the air and by then, people are big enough to make their own decisions.
The rugby schedule for the day is:
12:00    Russia v. Uruguay  (for fifth place)
2:45     England Saxons v Canada (shocker!)  (for first)
3:28     Robbie v Blackout
5:30     USA v France A   (for third)
In a nutshell:
8:30 – Rover (breakfast?)/ Raffle Drop-off
10:16 – Board Train
10:17- 11:33 – Debauchery
11:34 – Walk to Arena
12:00 – Kickoff
7:00ish- Celebrate USA beating France
7:01ish- Leave.  You don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here.
Ramble on,
Russ

MRFC 7′s at North Penn

Recap from Nick Lynch,

Monmouth had a tough day in Hatfield, going 0-3 and eliminated after pool play. We started off with a tough Baltimore-Chesapeake team losing 38-7. The team improved a bit in the second match, but still fell 24-12 to Reading. Finally, in a match we should have won, dropped to Drexel 19-12 to after giving away a few long scores while failing to capitalize on several good opportunities. Overall, our lack of experience as 7s team showed as we gave away several long breaks. We’ll now have 3 weeks to get ready for the next tournament at Harrisburg.

Warm Tour 2011

Barbados Pic

July 1st is quickly approaching! Place a payment, here.

Dates: Wednesday March 2nd through Tuesday March 8th (If you are interested but want a shorter trip please see notes on “mini-tour” below)

Where: Barbados, West Indies. We will be staying at the Dover Beach Hotel (http://www.doverbeach.com/) right on the beach and within walking distance to the St Lawrence Gap a popular nightlife destination. The rooms are double occupancy and you will have the choice of two twin beds or one queen size bed.

Cost: I expect the cost to be under $1,200 USD. (At this point it looks as if it may come in close to $1,000). This will include airfare, hotel room, kit, and tour dinner on Monday night. (Costs in Barbados seem fairly reasonable. At the moment the exchange rate is 2:1 in our favor. A beer seems to cost about $3 at a local bar).

Rugby: We have two “social” matches scheduled. One on Thursday March 3rd at 7:00pm under the lights and one on Saturday March 5th at 1:00 pm. The second match may very well be played in the midst of the most popular horse race in Barbados.

“Mini-Tour:” To accommodate some of the folks who want to be on tour but can’t take all the time off of work, if there is enough interest I will arrange a shorter tour. Thursday March 3rd through Sunday March 6th. The cost should be similar to the full tour as hotel will be a little less but airfare a little more without the group discount.

What I need: If you name does not appear on the list below and you want to go on tour please let me know ASAP. I need to know if you are playing and if you are interested in the full tour or the mini-tour.

Payment Schedule: In order to go on tour I will need $500 per person no later than July 1st so I may place deposits on airfare and the hotel rooms. I will need $500 by January 1st. The balance will be due prior to departing. Note if you want to go I must have $500 by July 1st – no I OWE YOU’s.

Monmouth 57 v Village Lions 0

md0519
Monmouth Men took on the Village Lions from New York to start the 2010 Monmouth Day celebrations. Conditions were good with a gusting wind straight down the pitch towards Brookdale College, Monmouth won the toss and took the wind.
The starting fifteen saw some changes form the previous weeks game against Albany including Tim Crane returning to loosehead prop, Sean Dunne Reynolds replace Nick Lynch at fullback with Nick moving to fly half and Brendan McSherry slotting in at outside center. Also the back row had a familiar look to it with Sean Mallon, Kevin Delia and Rob Shope being back together for the first time this season.
From the Lions kickoff Monmouth moved the ball left and following a quick ruck Joe Lucarelli combined with Kevin Kuestelski for a converted try within 40 seconds.
Scott Reilly’s refereeing was a contrast to the free for all at the ruck last week with both sides being obliged to stay on their feet and enter through the gate. This freed up the Monmouth forwards to create good phase possession which combined well with Nick Lynch’s distribution and right on five minutes Kuestelski bagged his second which was converted by Lucarelli.
Sean Mallon was on hand three minutes later with what is becoming his trademark picking up a loose ball and poaching a try from a yard or so out, try was converted by Joe.
The tight five of Crane, Michael Delia, Peterson, Russionello and Barlow were working well to give the backs excellent first phase ball from the scrum and lineout and on 14 minutes Monmouth got a great nudge through the tighthead about 40 meters out. Rob Shope picked from 8 and put Rob Morello in to space for a fine first phase score. Then Kuestelski grabbed his third for a hat trick within 21 minutes following great progress and support from Kevin Delia and the mobile Tim Crane
At this point the Monmouth forwards were presenting great ball to the backs and turning over the Lions to thwart all their attacks. Not to be outdone the pack made some great progress down the left and Barlow crashed over from five out for a converted try.
This left the score at 38-0 at the half where Crane was replaced by Kaldrovics who announced his arrival with a huge hit at the ruck just after the start of the second half which left the Lion he hit needing some attention. The next changes were May for Russionello and Hardy for Peterson to introduce some fresh legs in the tight five.
It was 18 minutes into the second half before Rob Shope extended the lead with a try converted by Lucarelli who was punishing the Lions with big runs. Joey Scott replaced James Barlow at second row and it was great to see Blue back in Monmouth colors after his first year in West Point where he played hooker.
Kaldrovics was then held just short but managed to dot down with an outstretched arm under the posts for another try converted by Lucarelli.
Sean Dunne Reynolds who had a fine outing was replaced at full back by Michael Dorata. Dorata is just back from his first year playing rugby at Rowan where he has developed into a fast strike fullback/fly half. Doug King took over from the unlucky Carlos Oliveria on the wing who could have picked up a couple of tries bar for some mistimed passes inside him. Joe Corbo also replaced Rob Shope with Sean Mallon sliding back to eight.
At the death Monmouth produced their best attack from deep in their own half for Kuestelski to grab his fourth to leave the final at 57-0 with Kevin failing to convert his own score.
Man of the match went to Tim Crane for his grafting first half performance at loosehead.
The b-side were beaten 37-5 with lots of Old Boys joining the team in the second half. Man of the match was the spry try scorer E.J. Duffy.
